Microsoft is planning to release an emergency security update for Windows which will patch a vulnerability in the way desktop shortcuts are created.

This security patch will prevent any malicious code being added to the shortcut icon when it is created on the desktop. Microsoft are releasing the patch prior to the monthly Patch Tuesday which falls on the 10^th this month after it has been found that the security threat is being exploited.

A known virus which is currently using the security vulnerability is part of the Sality virus family which infects other files too making it difficult to remove after infection has occurred.

Even the latest version of Windows, Windows 7 is affected along with Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista and Server 2008.

This security vulnerability is pretty bad and is not a bug it is a design feature that many hardware suppliers use to make their product work with Windows meaning blocking this feature is not a viable option for a fix.
